Accident and Emergency Recording Policy:

  • In the event of any accident, minor or major, an accident form must be filled in with the child and attending staff’s full name. The member of staff attending the accident and witness to the accident must then sign the form.

  • In the case of any minor accidents, the staff will report to a first aider and also the manager who will administer first aid as appropriate.

  • Any head injuries that may occur during an accident, even those that may not be visible must be reported to the child’s parent immediately allowing them to decide whether or not they would want to take the child to be seen by a medical professional and furthermore the child should not be allowed to sleep at least for up to 2 hours from the time of the accident.

  • In the event of all major accidents parents/carers will need informing straight away by the most senior person at the time.

  • The first aider on the premises will also be informed to remain with the child and act appropriately until paramedics arrive.

  • Accidents that require hospital attention should be reported to parent/carer straight away and a senior member of staff will accompany the child to the hospital with the child’s full details as on record with us.

  • Any accident requiring hospital attention must be reported to OFSTED and the Health and Safety department within 24 hours of the accident occurring.

Safeguarding Children Policy:

At the Alphabet House Nursery School we adopt and implement a robust practice, that will minimise risk of children being in danger of abuse and when concerns do arise, the nursery have policies and procedures in place to act promptly to deal with the concern.

  • A named person (deputy or manager) with clear defined role and responsibilities in relation to safeguarding, appropriate to the level at which he/she operates. The nursery manager .. Deputy Manager . and .. are the designated safe guarding officers at our setting. In any case involving safeguarding children, the Area Manager MUST be informed immediately.

  • The Nursery Manager will be the lead person and will be informed of a concern or allegation of abuse in relation to children within our setting. In the absence of the nursery manager, the deputy manager will be the lead person.

  • Efforts will be made to maintain confidentially and the information will only be shared on a strictly need to know basis.

  • All concerns will be discussed with the child’s parents and they will be informed that a referral is being made, except in cases where it is felt that such a discussion will put the child at risk, put the designated officer at risk, in cases of sexual abuse, or if there is a suspicion that a child’s illness is induced.

  • Under no circumstances should a nursery practitioner carry out their own investigation into suspicion or allegation of abuse, neither should they question children closely, as to do so may distort any investigation that may be carried out by senior management, police or social services, although it is the responsibility of the nursery practitioner to report any suspicions and make observations and notes etc.

  • All hand written notes must be dated with the name and a signature of the person reporting. This should be kept even if they are subsequently typed up in a more report format.

  • A safeguarding concern form must be completed by the person suspecting and reporting the concern. This must be duly named, dated and signed.

  • A description of any visible or physical injury must be recorded on the setting’s safeguarding concern form, by the person reporting (clothing should not be removed to inspect child), the body diagram sheet must be used to describe very clearly, details of the injury, marks etc if applicable).

  • In the case of concerns about comments made by a child, the exact words must be recorded.

Confidentiality Policy:

  • It is a legal requirement for the nursery, to hold information about the children, and the staff. The Alphabet House Nursery School holds information to be used for registers, invoices, emergency contact and safeguarding cases. However, all such records will be stored in a locked cabinet.

  • Due to positive staff/parent relationship, Staff may learn more information about the families, using the nursery. All staff are aware that the information is confidential and only for use within the nursery setting. If any of this information is requested for whatever reason, the parent’s permission will always be sought.

  • At The Alphabet House Nursery School, if a child/ children are considered at risk, our safeguarding policy, will over ride confidentiality.

Behaviour Management Policy:

Children need to have set boundaries of behaviour for their own safety and the safety of their peers. We aim to set these boundaries in ways that help children to develop a sense of the significance of their own behaviour, both on their own environment and those around them. Restrictions on the child’s own natural desire to explore and develop their own ideas and concepts are not accepted. Praise and encouragement are a significant part of motivating good behaviour.

  • We wholeheartedly support the Children Act guidelines on behaviour and sanctions, namely sanctions applied in the case of unacceptable behaviour must take account of the age and stage of development of the child, be given at the time, be relevant to the action or actions and be fair.

  • Time out to think and reflect, distraction, re-direction of attention span, giving alternative choices and other such similar accepted techniques are our chosen ways of handling children who are using unacceptable behaviour.

  • In a situation where a child is showing aggression or using inappropriate language where other children are, the child will be removed from this area by a the behaviour coordinator who will encourage and give the child some time to calm down before he/she re-joins the group.

  • A record of all significant and incidents and sanctions applied where appropriate is maintained in observations and a copy of the entry about a child is given to the parent/carer. It is nursery policy to involve the parent/carer so as to ensure that there is wherever possible consistency of action both at The Alphabet House and at home.

  • This sets out the principles by which we encourage good behaviour, when caring for children at The Alphabet House Nursery.
