Communication, Language & Literacy

During our daily circle time, children are encouraged to talk using varied and new words to increase their vocabulary.  They listen and respond to songs, stories, nursery rhymes and poems at circle times.

During our news time, children have opportunities to talk about their own experiences in large and smaller groups.

Their vocabulary increases and becomes more fluent as they converse with their classmates and nursery teachers, thus conveying true meaning to the listener and becoming better communicators.

At story time, the children are encouraged to role play and complete the story being read in their own words.  They are encouraged to imagine and recreate roles, develop understanding of spoken sounds and written words by sounding and blending, enjoying books by ascribing meaning to text.

Quiet reading time is a time when the children look at books, learn to handle them with care, understand how they are organised and begin to differentiate between words and pictures.

Our big books are used to illustrate that words and pictures carry meaning and English words are read from left to right.

They then learn to read simple words by putting letter sounds together.  Writing activities starts with free hand writing and later includes letter formation when the child is ready.

Children are given new story books to take home every Friday to enable parents bond with their children through reading and help the children increase their vocabulary and learn new words.

Children learn to write their own names and simple words with proper use of upper and lower case letters.

Mark making also encourage them to develop their random marks, lines and drawings to become the basis of recognisable letters.
