Mathematical Development
Our learning opportunities for the children will enable them to use descriptive, mathematical language such as bigger than, more than, in front of, square, circle, triangle etc to convey shape, position and quantity and to recognise, create and recreate patterns.
Such opportunities as described above are achieved through playing at the sand and water tray, using building bricks, inset of design etc.
During circle time they will become familiar with number, rhymes, songs, counting games and activities. Our sorting trays with objects, matching games, lotto cards will give the children opportunities to sort, match, and place in order and count everyday objects.
Through the use of Montessori number rods, sand paper numbers, number gels cards and counters, children are able to recognise and use numbers and then begin to understand the concept of larger numbers in their everyday lives.
The children are taught to use numbers as labels, for counting, sorting, matching and calculating shapes space and measurements are also introduced using concrete objects, appropriate mathematical vocabulary exploiting the mathematical potential of the outdoor and indoor environment through their physical activities.
By achieving the above our children are then able to solve practical problems in every day life using the correct mathematical terms.
